STAR WARS: EPISODE III
By John Barkshire
A vast sea of stars serves as the backdrop for the main title. War drums echo through the heavens as a rollup slowly crawls into infinity.
The Great CLONE WAR has ravaged the
Republic for three years. The galaxy has been
divided by countless battles.
Led by COUNT DOOKU, the Separatist Army has
captured Chancellor Palpatine and is laying siege to Coruscant.
Jedi Knights ANAKIN SKYWALKER and OBI-WAN
KENOBI are leading the Republic forces sent to rescue
the Chancellor and restore order to the galaxy...
Pan DOWN, to reveal hundreds of giant capital ships from both armies, locked in explosive combat. Two JEDI STARFIGHTERS zoom overhead to join the battle. Dozens, then hundreds, of REPUBLIC STARFIGHTERS trail.
EXT: JEDI STARFIGHTER - COCKPIT.
ANAKIN: Red Group, Green Group, follow me.
PULL BACK to reveal a huge REPUBLIC FIGHTERS in 3 ‘V’ FORMATIONS. The respective formation leaders look toward Anakin’s fighter, and nod in agreement.
ZOOM IN: REPUBLIC FIGHTER - COCKPIT
TROOPER: Yes, sir.
ZOOM OUT: SPACE
The FIGHTERS peel off from the main formation, following the shimmering red of Anakin’s new fighter.
The camera follows them through their manoeuvre, trembling and shaking with the barrage of laser fire bearing down on the troops and their Jedi Leader.
Pan sharply RIGHT to reveal an exploding REPUBLIC STARSHIP. The vacuum of space pulls dozens of STORMTOOPERS through a gaping wound in the ship.
We follow the STARFIGHTERS as they begin firing wildly at hundreds, if not thousands of FEDERATION DROID STARFIGHTERS. Anakin leads a majority of the REPUBLIC FIGHTERS through the enemy formation to relative safety. He is confident and self-assured as a military leader, and commands the respect of the entire Republic Fleet.
INT: JEDI STARFIGHTER
OBI-WAN: Anakin! What are you doing?
Anakin replies over a COM-LINK, worn across OBI-WANS forehead.
ANAKIN (V.O.): We’ve just lost one ship; we can’t afford to lose another.
OBI-WAN looks concerned.
OBI-WAN thinks over his next move. He quickly comes to a decision.
OBI-WAN: Blue Group, follow me. We’ll cut them off at their rear. Shaak Ti’s signal is coming from that Cruiser over there.
INT: JEDI STARFIGHTER – INSTRUMENT PANEL, showing the giant FEDERATION FLAGSHIP on a futuristic RADAR.
Obi-Wan (V.O.)...we’ll have to try to board.
INT: REPUBLIC FIGHTER
BLUE LEADER: Roger that, sir.
EXT: SPACE. Obi-Wan’s Green JEDI STARFIGHTER leads his formation through the heart of the battle, weaving between giant STARSHIPS engaged in desperate battle. Many of the REPUBLIC FIGHTERS are lost to crossfire and TRADE FEDERATION DROID STARFIGHTERS. QUICK-CUTS to cockpit shots of various other Jedi, including PLO KOON and SAESEE TIN, amongst others.
INT: REPUBLIC FIGHTER
STORMTROOPER: Sir! I’m under heavy fi-
EXT: SPACE. He is cut off as his ship EXPLODES. OBI-WAN is left alone, the only survivor of his wing. He continues to skilfully dodge enemy fire, and destroys several enemy STARFIGHTERS.
EXT: ANAKIN’S STARFIGHTER. The camera trails behind Anakin’s fighter as he executes perfect dodges, barrel-rolls, dives and other aerobatics, dodging a merciless barrage of laser-fire and destroying dozens of DROID STARFIGHTERS. There is no doubt he is the best star-pilot in the fleet.
INT: ANAKIN’S STARFIGHTER. Anakin is clearly enjoying himself.
ANAKIN: Having fun, Master Obi-Wan?
OBI-WAN replies over Com-Link, in a playful, if pressured voice.
OBI-WAN (V.O.): Let me remind you who your master once was, my old Padawan.
ANAKIN laughs.
ANAKIN: I’d hate to have to prove you wrong.
He continues to destroy everything in his sights. Several REPUBLIC FIGHTERS explode behind Anakin.
Various shots of REPUBLIC PILOTS being killed.
EXT: OBI-WAN’S FIGHTER. Obi-Wan, still alone, barrel rolls past the BRIDGE of the FEDERATION FLAGSHIP
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE.
COUNT DOOKU is pondering his next move. Noticing the JEDI STARFIGHTER, his stately demeanour is almost ruffled for a second, but he quickly regains his usual regal composure. He turns from the window and looks down to one of the NEIMOIDIAN GUNNERS sat at a blinking console. The Neimoidian looks back in fear. THE COUNT furrows his brow, pondering his fleet’s tactics.
NEIMOIDIAN: ...Sir?
COUNT DOOKU: The Jedi’s fleet is too strong. Send out the Seeker Droids.
NEIMOIDIAN: Yes, sir. (He presses a button)
EXT: FEDERATION BATTLESHIP. A small hatch opens on the hull of the Capital Ship. Dozens of small chrome SEEKER DROIDS emerge, rockets firing. They instantly pick up on OBI-WAN’S STARFIGHTER, and zoom in to attack.
INT: OBI-WANS STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – OBI-WAN’S P.O.V. Obi-Wan can see the tiny drones emerging, their rockets firing them toward his fighter.
OBI-WAN: What’s that, R4?
EXT: OBI-WAN’S STARFIGHTER
The little DROID beeps confusedly.
INT: OBI-WAN’S COCKPIT. The SEEKER DROIDS latch onto the Starfighter’s hull, and immediately get to work, firing cutting laser beams through the ship. Obi-Wan starts to spin the ship violently, and throws them off – but more start emerging! Soon the ship is almost covered in the deadly machines, and is being cut to pieces!
OBI-WAN: Anakin! I need help here!
EXT: STARFIGHTER – WING. The SEEKERS make their way around the ship’s exterior, stripping it first of it’s laser cannons, then making their way around to it’s fins. One of the droids bumps into R4, who starts spinning, terrified.
CLOSE UP – SEEKER DRONE – WING. The little droid is squealing and whirring, to no avail. The drone ignites its laser beam, and decapitates the red headed droid in a single motion.
INT: ANAKIN’S FIGHTER – COCKPIT. Anakin is almost single-handedly decimating the Separatist Starfighter fleet.
ANAKIN: I thought you were the Master here?
OBI-WAN (V.O.): Yes, yes, no time for that! I need help now!!!
ANAKIN looks down at his cockpit instruments.
ANAKIN: Red Leader, you’re in charge now.
INT: REPUBLIC FIGHTER – COCKPIT
RED LEADER: Roger that Sir. We shouldn’t have too much trouble.
EXT: ANAKIN’S STARFIGHTER
Anakin spots Obi-Wan’s flaming fighter spinning completely out of control. He starts counting under his breath.
C.U: R2-D2
R2: Makes loud, terrified Droid squeaks and beeps.
Anakin starts spinning his own fighter in exact synchronisation with Obi-Wans. Slowly at first, then quicker, and quicker, as he gets closer and closer.
INT: OBI-WAN’S STARFIGHTER – COCKPIT
OBI-WAN: Anakin, what are you doing!?
ANAKIN (V.O.): Trust me, Master.
ANAKIN lets loose a VOLLEY OF LASER BLASTS, blowing away many of the drones. The only SEEKER DROIDS left have congregated on the left wing of the fighter. The fighter itself is in bad shape, but just about has enough power left to stay in (almost) one piece.
OBI-WAN: Anakin!
INT: ANAKINS STARFIGHTER – COCKPIT
Anakin bites his lip and narrows his eyes. His ship is spinning in perfect opposition to his old Masters.
INT: OBI-WANS STARFIGHTER – COCKPIT (OBI-WANS P.O.V.)
Obi-Wan looks apprehensive as Anakin’s ship hurtles towards his.
EXT: SPACE
Then – the ships collide! Anakin slams his fighter into Obi-Wans. The impact was glancing, but enough to send the rest of the SEEKERS spiralling flaming into space.
INT: ANAKINS STARFIGHTER – COCKPIT
Anakin laughs to himself.
INT: OBI-WANS STARFIGHTER – COCKPIT
OBI-WAN exhales, relieved. But it wasn’t enough! His instruments start beeping warnings! Lights flash, and the cockpit starts SHAKING WILDLY as the Jedi struggles to keep control. His face turns to grim determination.
OBI-WAN: Anakin! I’m going down!!!
ANAKIN (V.O.): I’ll be right there!
OBI-WAN: Oh no...
INT: COCKPIT – OBI-WANS P.O.V. He’s heading straight for the FEDERATION FLAGSHIP! Anakin quickly pulls up alongside his old master. They are still managing to dodge the few laser blasts fired from various ships.
EXT: SPACE – JEDI STARFIGHTERS
ANAKIN: That’s where Shaak Ti’s last transmission was from, wasn’t it?
OBI-WAN is still struggling to speak, such is the effort keeping his fighter under control.
OBI-WAN: That’s the one. I’m going to have to crash-land.
ANAKIN: Follow me in.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE
NEIMOIDIAN: Sir, The Jedi are heading for the Hangar!
For the first time during the battle, DOOKU looks alarmed.
DOOKU: Seal the Hangar! Do not allow them to get in.
NEIMOIDIAN: Roger that.
He presses a bright blue button on his control panel.
EXT: FEDERATION FLASGHIP – HANGAR
The giant Hangar doors start to close. The Jedi fighters accelerate towards it, but – Obi-Wans engine starts to cut out! The doors continue to close as he approaches.
INT: OBI-WANS STARFIGHTER – COCKPIT.
Obi-Wan grits his teeth. He’s not come this far to falter now.
EXT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – HANGAR
Anakin easily blasts into the hangar of the giant FEDERATION FLAGSHIP. Anakin skims his ship through a crowd of various BATTLE DROIDS, and lands coolly, leaping from his cockpit with a flail of lightsabre attacks, deflecting blaster shots and cutting easily through the Hangar’s guards.
Obi-Wans fighter loses it’s power just as the doors are about to slam shut. Obi-Wan focuses. He bangs against the edges of the doors, but gets through - but is heading straight for the Hangar walls! He grabs his lightsabre, and miraculously cuts through his cockpit and, at the last second, escapes! The fighter explodes against the hangar walls, smashing a huge hole into the engine room.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – HANGAR
Anakin has a huge grin on his face. Obi-Wan replies with a relieved smile.
ANAKIN: That was close, master.
Obi-Wan’s smile widens.
OBI-WAN: No thanks to you. What were you doing, crashing into me like that!
ANAKIN: You know me, Master.
OBI-WAN: Shaak Ti’s signal is still transmitting. We’d better start looking for her.
The Jedi sense something. A metallic clang gets louder and louder, until dozens of DESTROYER DROIDS roll into the Hangar. The uncurl their bodies and start their shield generators...but all they find is ARTOO, whistling to himself as he rolls across the hangar floor. They turn awkwardly, spotting the hole made by the crashed fighter...
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP - BRIDGE
The Neimoidian is cowering. He speaks with his head bowed in humility to his master.
NEIMOIDIAN: The Jedi have boarded the ship, sir.
COUNT DOOKU throws an arm back angrily. His temper is short-lived, though, and he soons cracks a sinister smile at the Neimoidian sat in a trench lined by computer consoles..
DOOKU: Excellent. Make sure they find their way to the General’s quarters. He’s getting quite efficient at disposing of Jedi.
The Neimoidian bows slightly, and quickly crawls away.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – ENGINE ROOM
The Jedi are quickly making their way through the Starship. The engine room roars loudly as huge vats of fuel pump into various pieces of machinery. The Jedi have to shout at each other to be heard.
ANAKIN: Where’s the signal coming from?
OBI-WAN: Just above here.
Suddenly, the DESTROYER DROIDS, now joined by various other BATTLEDROIDS, burst into the ENGINE ROOM and begin firing madly at the JEDI. The Knights defend the blows effortlessly, parrying the blasts away from each other, but the sheer number of attacking droids quickly overwhelms them. A volley of blasts aimed at Obi-Wan is deflected by Anakin just as they are about to hit, but inadvertently strike a huge fuel pipe, rupturing it.
CLOSE UP ON: A COMPUTER SCREEN, displaying a FUEL PRESSURE CONTROLLER. The ruptured pipe is quickly causing the pressure to rise dangerously high. The huge tanks creak and groan under the strain.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – ENGINE ROOM
The Jedi continue to defend, cutting down any droids that get too close.
OBI-WAN: Anakin, the tanks pressure is too high!
ANAKIN: We’d better get out of here.
OBI-WAN: I think you’re right.
The Jedi try to make their escape, but before they can get away the fuel tanks crash apart under the pressure! Fuel floods the entire room, and the Jedi are swept off their feet by the incredible flood! Some of the droids are swept into one another, smashing apart under the rushing fuel!
CLOSE-UP: Anakin - swimming
As the room fills up, the Jedi search desperately for a way out. Anakin spots a ventilation grill at the rooms ceiling, and swims over to position himself under it.
CLOSE-UP: Obi-Wan - Underwater
Meanwhile, Obi-Wan is fighting hand-to-hand with Battle Droids, submerged in the fuel.
CLOSE-UP: Anakin
ANAKIN: Obi-Wan? (louder and slightly angry) Obi-Wan?!
Anakin dives under the water, using the Force to pull a sharp pipe from the ceiling above him. He swims down to see Obi-Wan fighting off the droids with his bare hands. One of the droids spots an opening and grabs Obi-Wan by the throat. Anakin quickly joins the fight, using the pipe to impale a line of droids together and frees Obi-Wan. The two of them make their way to the ventilation grill, and, before the fuel can fill the room, Obi-Wan uses his lightsabre to cut through the ceiling.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE
COUNT DOOKU is pacing the Bridge, watching the battle unfold above the amber of Coruscant. Through his window we can see various Republic and Separatist BATTLESHIPS exploding and firing on one another. REPUBLIC STARFIGHTERS occasionally zoom past the window, in pursuit of and pursuing enemy ships. A klaxon occasionally wails, and the ship shudders and shakes under the burden of it’s damage.
NEIMOIDIAN: Sir, we’ve got a fuel leak in the Engine room!
DOOKU SEETHES
DOOKU: The Jedi will not get away with this. Where are they now?
NEIMOIDIAN: They’re in the General’s Quarters. They’re going after the Chancellor, sir.
DOOKU: The General can deal with them.
DOOKU turns back to his viewing window.
CLOSE-UP: COUNT DOOKU.
DOOKU SMILES.
DOOKU: Excellent.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – THE GENERAL’S QUARTERS
Obi-Wan and Anakin pull themselves out of the fuel. Them seem soaking wet but the fuel is quickly evaporating. They are in a large, angular room, with buzzing computer screens and dull lighting. Obi-Wan checks his transmitter.
CLOSE-UP: OBI-WAN – WRIST TRANSMITTER
OBI-WAN (V.O.): Shaak Ti is in here.
EXT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – THE GENERAL’S QUARTERS
He peers around the room.
ANAKIN: Look, over there!
ANAKIN and OBI-WAN run over to the other end of the room. SHAAK TI is kneeling, her hands bound by cuffs and her eyes closed in meditation. Sensing the Jedi, she opens her eyes. She looks extremely afraid.
OBI-WAN: What is it?
CLOSE UP: SHAAK TI
SHAAK TI tries to yell a warning
SHAAK TI: MAS-
She is run through. A blue lightsabre is stabbed from the darkness, into her back. She gasps for a beat, then falls. OBI-WAN ignites his laser sword before running over to help. He’s too late. She is dead. Obi-Wan has no time to grieve though, as the same lightsabre swings at his head!
CLOSE-UP: ANAKIN
ANAKIN: Master, look out!!!
CLOSE-UP: OBI-WAN
OBI-WAN rolls backwards, narrowly avoiding the blow. He stands firm, ready to take on the mystery assassin.
OBI-WAN: You find the Chancellor, I’ll take care of this.
Exit ANAKIN.
CLOSE UP: GENERAL’S QUARTERS – DARKNESS
First a clawed robotic foot steps out of the shadow. We PAN UP to reveal GENERAL GRIEVOUS! Wearing a white cape that conceals his entire body but for one arm, his ghostly white face and yellowed eyes stare Obi-Wan down. The General deactivates the lightsabre and places it into a holster belt running across his chest. The belt is filled with about a dozen sabres, taken from Jedi killed previously by the General.
He then turns his back on Obi-Wan and beckons over two of his HENCHMEN – droids similar in look to their General, who are carrying PIKES, a secret Separatist weapon used specifically to counter lightsabres. The droids stalk Obi-Wan, forcing him to back away from the General and in an attempt to corner him.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – CORRIDOR
ANAKIN is running through some grimy corridors, clearly a part of the Maintenance decks and in stark contrast to the sleek, clinical styling of the Bridge and upper levels. He enters an elevator – he needs to get up to the prison level.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – GENERAL’S QUARTERS
OBI-WAN is fighting off the droids. Far more skilled than simple battledroids, and tougher than even Droidekas, they engage Obi-Wan in mortal combat. With the Force on his side, he eventually catches one droid out, severing its arm and then it’s leg. After a short battle with the second HENCHMAN, he emerges victorious. He quickly goes after the General, only to find he’s disappeared...
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE
GENERAL GRIEVOUS arrives at the Bridge level using an elevator. He strides over to COUNT DOOKU, still observing the battle. It is clear the Republic forces have the upper hand, but he still remains confident. He appears to be shouting at a particularly scared Neimoidian.
COUNT DOOKU: Don’t be a fool. Surely The Republic wouldn’t dare fire on this ship? Not as long as we have the Chancellor. Is there any way we can we go into Hyperspace?
CLOSE-UP: NEIMOIDIAN
NEIMOIDIAN: Not yet sir. Our engineers are on the Engine level, they’re trying to repair the fuel pumps. It’s too risky to make the jump.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE
COUNT DOOKU: The Chancellor cannot leave this ship. (He spots GRIEVOUS) Ah, General. I trust you bring me good news of the Jedi?
GENERAL GRIEVOUS: They’re on their way up here.
COUNT DOOKU: Even better than I expected.
INT: REPUBLIC STARFIGHTER – COCKPIT
RED LEADER: We’re going to try and disable the Flagship. Try firing on the engines.
Various Stormtroopers V.O. in acknowledgment.
EXT: SPACE – REPUBLIC STARFIGHTER FORMATION
The FIGHTERS swoop down to begin their attack on the FLAGSHIP’s engines. RED LEADER fires a FINNED MISSILE at the ships engines.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – ENGINE ROOM
NEIMOIDIAN ENGINEERS are attempting to drain the room – when BOOM! – the entire room is engulfed in flame! We only see the look of horror on the ENGINEERS face as we cut to -
EXT: SPACE - FEDERATION FLAGSHIP
A HUGE EXPLOSION! The ships engines begin to fail as it loses its major power supply. They die, and then restart at half the original power as the secondary power source is routed. Guns and shields go offline to compensate.
INT. FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE
The NEIMOIDIAN CONTROLLERS are panicking. Dooku remains calm and in control. He paces for a few moments.
NEIMOIDIAN: Sir, we’ve lost all guns and shields! We’re an easy target!
DOOKU: Relax. The Republic will be forced to board if they want the Chancellor alive. They will be no match for the Sith...
GENERAL GRIEVOUS: Or me.
DOOKU LAUGHS, and walks away.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – ELEVATOR.
Anakin is standing, waiting to arrive at his floor. The ELEVATOR jars to a sudden halt, and various EXPLOSIONS can be heard all around. The lights flicker as the power begins to fail. The ELEVATOR suddenly plummets for a brief moment – enough to startle Anakin into thinking something isn’t quite right. His instincts are correct. He ignites his sabre, cuts through the top of the elevator and climbs on top.
He looks up, and as another EXPLOSION sends the elevator plummeting to its doom, leaps up – just enough to grab the edge of the shaft! He focuses for a moment, and using the FORCE, leaps miraculously onto both feet. He’s on the DETENTION LEVEL. He runs down the corridor to find the CHANCELLOR.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – DETENTION AREA
ARTOO rolls down an adjoining corridor, making various droid-like whistles.
ANAKIN: Artoo? Is that you?
Artoo beeps cheerfully.
ANAKIN: Artoo. It is you. Have you any idea what happened to Obi-Wan?
Artoo cheeps and whistles sadly.
OBI-WAN: I’m here.
All three are happily surprised to see one another in one piece.
ANAKIN: We’ve got to find the Chancellor. This ship is falling apart.
OBI-WAN: I’m with you there.
They all run down into the CELL BLOCK area.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – CELL BLOCK
CHANCELLOR PALPATINE is sat sombrely in his cell. While looking old, his face belies an unseen strength that he once, and perhaps still does, possess. He’s visibly happy to see Anakin.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – DETENTION BLOCK CORRIDOR
PALPATINE: Master...Anakin! Oh, I am pleased to see you.
ANAKIN: Your Excellency.
OBI-WAN: Chancellor.
ANAKIN immediately ignites his lightsabre and cuts down the CELL DOOR. PALPATINE pays huge respect to Anakin for rescuing him, with barely a cursory acknowledgement at Obi-Wans involvement.
PALPATINE: This is quite incredible. Your skill and bravery have saved me, and may indeed save the Republic from this war. Congratulations also, Master Kenobi.
OBI-WAN smiles somewhat cynically. ANAKIN is lapping up the praise.
ANAKIN: Thankyou, Chancellor. Master Obi-Wan was lucky to have me ar-
OBI-WAN interjects.
OBI-WAN: There will be enough time to tell your battle stories when we’ve finished our job, Anakin. We still need to find Dooku so we can open negotiations. Only then we can start calling this war anywhere near ‘over’. Anakin remember; if we do confront him you must not lose control. Remember what happened last time. (He looks at Anakin’s robotic limb) Here, we can take this elevator.
PALPATINE: I think you underestimate (he emphasises the title) MASTER Skywalker, Master Kenobi. I’m sure he knows what he has to do.
ANAKIN: I can take care of myself, Obi-Wan. I’m not your student anymore.
OBI-WAN: With all due respect Chancellor -
ANAKIN POINTS at Obi-Wan. The atmosphere is almost tense.
ANAKIN: The elevator is out. Trust me.
OBI-WAN: We’ll have to find another way. Follow me.
OBI-WAN leads the group. ANAKIN follows, with an angry glint in his eye. Palpatine and Artoo struggle to keep pace.
PALPATINE: Master Jedi, I overheard the engineers talking about the routes they use for maintenance. Perhaps we could use them?
OBI-WAN: Good idea.
PALPATINE: It may, unfortunately, be too much for your little droid.
ARTOO whistles sadly.
OBI-WAN: Good point. Artoo, you make your own way to the Bridge. The other droids won’t notice you...unlike us. We’ll meet you up there.
ARTOO mumbles squeakily, and rolls away.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – MAINTENANCE GANTRY
The trio are making their way slowly across thin piping used by the engineers. Steam and flames flare up around them. OBI-WAN leads the group across. ANAKIN is making sure PALPATINE is safe, constantly checking over his shoulder.
OBI-WAN: Quickly now. It looks like this whole ship is falling apart.
Pieces of the ships structure start falling around them. The Jedi make it across.
ANAKIN: Chancellor, are you okay?
PALPTINE: I’m fine, my friend.
PALPATINE takes his final step just in time. The entire Maintenance system falls in smoke and flame just as they get across.
OBI-WAN: Let’s get to the Bridge.
INT: REPUBLIC STARSHIP – BRIDGE
REPUBLIC COMMANDER: Any word from the Jedi? Do they have the Chancellor?
REPUBLIC CAPTAIN: No word yet, sir.
REPUBLIC COMMANDER: Get a shuttle and boarding party ready, Captain. Just in case.
CAPTAIN: Right away, sir.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE
COUNT DOOKU is pacing slowly up and down the walkway.
NEIMOIDIAN: The Jedi are making their way to the Bridge sir.
DOOKU: General Grievous. Finish them off.
GRIEVOUS nods in acknowledgement, then stomps menacingly away.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE CORRIDOR
GENERAL GRIEVOUS scans the corridor for the Jedi briefly, then continues to hunt...until CLANG! He bangs into the familiar blue dome of ARTOO! GRIEVOUS immediately draws a lightsabre, but realising it’s just a little droid, withdraws. Artoo whirrs in fear, and quickly speeds backwards, away from the sinister General. Grievous ignores the droid, but for a hard kick as he walks by. Artoo whimpers, and continues toward the BRIDGE.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE CORRIDOR
The trio continue to make good progress and are near the Bridge. The Jedi are easily cutting down the few Battledroids remaining, until PALPATINE spots GENERAL GRIEVOUS bearing down on them.
PALPATINE: Master Jedi!
OBI-WAN looks up and recognises the Generals expressionless face. The General immediately targets him, and ignites a lightsabre.
OBI-WAN: Anakin, get to the Bridge and tell the Republic to send backup! Let them know we’ve got the Chancellor.
ANAKIN: I can help.
OBI-WAN: No, it’s too important. I can handle this.
As he finishes the words, GRIEVOUS SPRINTS towards OBI-WAN! He’s faster than any droid yet seen! He leaps at the Jedi, sabre ignited, but Obi-Wan is too skilled, and parries the blow. Grievous SMASHES into the corridor wall, but after only a beat to compose himself attempts to resume his attack.
OBI-WAN: Remember what I said about Dooku, Anakin. We need him alive.
ANAKIN: I’ll be alright.
The pair run down the corridor.
CLOSE-UP on GRIEVOUS as he decides who to take first. He doesn’t get time to decide as Obi-Wan slices at him, forcing him to defend.
INT: FEDERATION STARSHIP – BRIDGE.
Most of the NEIMOIDIAN CONTROLLERS have vacated their seats for the escape pods – the few that remain quickly scuttle across from their consoles to the BRIDGE ESCAPE PODS. COUNT DOOKU stands alone, his back turned to a vengeful looking Anakin.
ANAKIN: Count Dooku.
DOOKU (Turning to face ANAKIN): Ah, so glad you could join us, Master...Skywalker, isn’t it? I’ve been hearing great things about you, my young Jedi friend.
ANAKIN: I was just a learner before, Dooku. You don’t know how strong I’ve become.
DOOKU: Oh really? And what makes you think that you are a match for the Sith?
ANAKIN: You won’t defeat me again.
DOOKU: We shall see.
COUNT DOOKU raises his hands to blast Anakin with SITH LIGHTNING – it doesn’t last for long, as ANAKIN is already running at him, his lightsabre absorbing the Dark Energy. Dooku is forced, at the last second, to ignite his own sabre and engage the young Jedi one on one. Anakin really is more powerful this time, and catches Dooku by surprise, forcing him to parry blow after ferocious blow. PALPATINE takes a seat at the BRIDGE COMMANDERS CHAIR, and watches proceedings unfold.
DOOKU: Is that all you can manage?
ANAKINS eyes are wild. He is lusting for revenge, and forcing DOOKU to fight defensively and with caution. However, DOOKUS superior control soon starts to put him on equal ground, and the two are pretty evenly matched, until – a sudden movement catches ANAKIN off guard, and DOOKU manages to inflict a glancing but deep across on ANAKINS LEG. ANAKIN falls to one knee in pain. PALPATINE rises from his chair in concern for his good friend. ANAKIN looks up at DOOKU, enraged.
DOOKU: Still not good enough.
DOOKU brings his sabre down for the killer blow. It strikes – against ANAKINS LIGHTSABRE! DOOKU is completely taken aback as the power of Anakin’s parry knocks his lightsabre from his grasp! Anakin, in one swift movement, cuts DOOKUS arm off at the elbow! DOOKU falls to he knees in pain, clutching the stump of his arm. ANAKIN now seems to tower of the fallen Count.
DOOKU looks first at his wound, then across to PALPATINE.
PALPATINE: You would be a hero, Anakin.
PALPATINE, sitting once again in the Commanders Chair, emotionlessly STARES BACK. DOOKU slowly LOOKS UP at ANAKIN, who is BREATHING HEAVILY, clearly quite exhausted from the battle. Anakins face contorts with rage as we
CUT to PALPATINE. He watches on as Anakin looks down at his ROBOTIC ARM, and as the anger takes hold, STRIKES at DOOKU, cleaving his head cleanly from his body. The former Jedi’s body collapses, dead. As the realisation of what he’s done sinks in, Anakin becomes upset.
ANAKIN: What have I done?
PALPATINE: The right thing, my friend. The right thing.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE CORRIDOR.
OBI-WAN and GRIEVOUS are still fighting. Obi-Wan is clearly the better swordsman, but Grievous’ strength is too much, and he manages to PUNCH Obi-Wan hard across the face. Obi-Wan slides across the shiny corridor floor, knocked unconscious by the blow. As General Grievous stalks across the floor to finish off yet another Jedi, he hears ANAKIN and PALPATINE walking down the corridor. In no condition to risk taking on two Jedi, he makes his retreat.
ANAKIN: Master Obi-Wan?
Obi-Wan is totally unconscious. Anakin picks him up and carries him over his back.
EXT: SPACE - FEDERATION FLAGSHIP
A sudden, HUGE EXPLOSION rocks the ship. The explosion blows various fighters circling the FLAGSHIP apart. The Flagship itself is blown almost entirely in two by the force. The back half begins to the lighter top half down, towards Coruscant...
INT: REPUBLIC STARSHIP – BRIDGE
REPUBLIC COMMANDER: Captain! We need that Shuttle now! The ship could go at any moment!
CAPTAIN: Roger that sir.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – ESCAPE POD ROOM
GENERAL GRIEVOUS, rocked by the explosion uses the time he has to escape. He looks at the escape Pods when BOOM! The rooms entrance caves in, stopping him from progressing – or so it seems. He smashes through the top of the room, and crawls along the hull to an open Pod, and blasts away.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE CORRIDOR
The corridor cracks open under the pressure, and as the three reach the Bridge entrance the corridors begins to collapse, and they start sliding down it. The explosion jerks OBI-WAN from Anakin’s hold. ANAKIN reacts instantly, grabbing his old master with one hand as the other clings to a fallen cable. THE CHANCELLOR is slowly sliding down the same length of cable.
Using uncanny strength, Anakin throws Obi-Wan to the safety of the Bridge. ARTOO uses his JETS to manoeuvre himself to a control panel, ready to shut the BRIDGE DOORS as soon as Anakin has retrieved a slowly falling PALPATINE.
Anakin slides after him, controlling his descent. He uses his wrist-mounted COM-LINK to contact the REPUBLIC STARSHIP.
ANAKIN: Commander!
REPUBLIC COMMANDER (V.O): Master Skywalker?
INT: REPUBLIC STARSHIP – BRIDGE
ANAKIN (V.O.): This entire ship’s falling apart! We need help now!
REPUBLIC COMMANDER: We’re sending over a task force to help you. Is there any way you can get to the controls?
ANAKIN (V.O.): I can try.
INT: FEDERATION STARSHIP – BRIDGE CORRIDOR
ANAKIN: I’m going to try and get the Chancellor into an Escape Pod.
REPUBLIC COMMANDER (V.O.): Roger that.
ANAKIN continues to SLIDE after the CHANCELLOR. He grabs him by the arm and uses all his strength to pull the two of them to safety. As they reach the BRIDGE, ARTOO plugs into a CONTROL PORT, and locks the Bridge Doors.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP - BRIDGE
Anakin and Palpatine sigh with relief as Obi-Wan begins to come round.
ANAKIN: Chancellor, you’ve got to get into the Escape Pod. You too, Artoo.
OBI-WAN: Where’s Dooku?
ANAKIN looks to the floor, half-ashamed, half-desperate to revel in his own glory.
ANAKIN: He -
PALPATINE: He’s dead. Anakin saved me. We tried to negotiate, but the Count was furious at his impending defeat, and came at me. It was Anakin’s heroics that saved me from certain death. He had no choice, I assure you.
OBI-WAN: Is this true, Anakin?
ANAKIN attempts to answer.
PALPATINE: But of course. You should be proud of him, Master Kenobi.
ANAKINS COM-LINK BEEPS.
ANAKIN: Commander?
REPUBLIC COMMANDER (V.O.): We’ve got a problem.
ANAKIN: What is it?
INT: REPUBLIC STARSHIP - BRIDGE
REPUBLIC COMMANDER: The ship is heading straight for Coruscant.
PAN RIGHT to the VIEWING WINDOW. The FLAGSHIP is falling straight towards CORUSCANT.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE
ANAKIN immediately leaps into action.
ANAKIN: Master Obi-Wan, get the Chancellor and Artoo into an Escape Pod. I’m going to try and crash land the ship.
OBI-WAN: Crash land?
ANAKIN: Would you rather it crash into Coruscant? I’ve got to try.
ANAKIN CONFIDENTLY TAKES THE CONTROLS.
EXT: CITYSCAPE - CORUSCANT – MIDDAY
The FLAGSHIP is starting to enter the cityscape of Coruscant. Various SPEEDERS bump into one another - traffic almost stops dead at the sight of the burning FLAGSHIP. By now the entire ship is wreathed in flame.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – ESCAPE POD
PALPATINE and ARTOO clamber into the POD as Anakin wrestles with the ships various control levers. OBI-WAN seals it off.
EXT. CITYSCAPE CORUSCANT – MIDDAY
The ESCAPE POD blasts away toward the dome of the GALACTIC SENATE. OBI-WAN joins ANAKIN at the controls of the ship.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP - BRIDGE
OBI-WAN: Use the Force Anakin. Clear your mind.
ANAKIN: We’re going to need some help.
EXT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – CORUSCANT – MIDDAY
The ship continues to burn as it plummets toward the shining cityscape of The Capital.
EXT: LANDING PAD – CORUSCANT – MIDDAY
Various REPUBLIC SHUTTLES are taking off to aid the Jedi. The CORUSCANT FIREFIGHTER SERVICE takes the lead.
INT: FIRESHIP – COCKPIT
FIRESHIP PILOT: Follow us; we’ll put out what fire we can.
EXT: CITYSCAPE – CORUSCANT – MIDDAY
The burning wreckage is now past most of the bigger buildings that make up the Coruscant skyline. The FIRESHIPS and various REPUBLIC craft are guiding the massive battleship down.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE
ANAKIN is wrestling with the controls, with a look of grim determination on his face. Obi-Wan stands by, concerned.
EXT: SENATE BUILDING WALKWAY – MIDDAY
PALPATINE and ARTOO struggle out of the Escape Pod, while a huge crowd of SENATORS and various REPUBLIC STORMTROOPERS rush to help, but PALPATINE brushes them aside as he tries to get a better view of the burning ship. ARTOO just enjoys the fuss.
EXT: CITYSCAPE – CORUSCANT – MIDDAY
SLAM! The ship crashes into the ground! Various explosions rock the entire city as it scrapes along a long deserted area of Coruscant. The FIRESHIPS are hosing down the fire with jets of water, and soon get to work creating a perimeter around the fallen ship.
YODA and MACE fly overhead in a REPUBLIC GUNSHIP, piloted by STORMTROOPERS.
INT: FEDERATION FLAGSHIP – BRIDGE
Anakin and Obi-Wan are slumped back, relaxing after their struggles.
ANAKIN: We made it.
OBI-WAN breathes a sigh of relief.
TROOPERS and FIRESHIP PILOTS make their way into the BRIDGE, and help the JEDI to stand.
EXT: CORUSCANT – FEDERATION FLAGSHIP WRECK
YODA and MACE land next to the ship as OBI-WAN and ANAKIN clamber out of the flaming wreck. They’re both pretty beaten-up from the crash. YODA and MACE exit to greet them.
OBI-WAN: Well, we made it.
ANAKIN: I told you I could do land it.
OBI-WAN: What you did was reckless Anakin. You could have caused a disaster.
ANAKIN shrugs him off moodily as PALPATINE lands aboard a SENATE TAXI. OBI-WAN makes his way over to MACE and YODA. ANAKIN smiles at the realisation that Palpatine is okay, and goes to join him.
OBI-WAN: The Separatist fleet is crippled.
MACE: Commanders are already reporting Separatist forces in full retreat.
OBI-WAN BOARDS
INT: REPUBLIC GUNSHIP
YODA: And Dooku?
OBI-WAN shifts uncomfortably and looks over to ANAKIN as the TAXI takes off. The GUNSHIP is rising slowly from the ground.
OBI-WAN: He’s dead. Anakin defeated him.
YODA: Powerful has Skywalker become. A dangerous time for him, this is.
MACE and OBI-WAN nod sombrely in agreement as
EXT: CORUSCANT CITYSCAPE
the GUNSHIP FLIES AWAY, the FLAMING WRECK of the Flagship still burning behind them.
EXT: SENATE BUILDING – DUSK
The massive dome of the Senate glows almost sinisterly in the red sky. Smoke from the crash is still blowing across the Skyline.
INT: PALPATINE’S OFFICE
Various SENATORS are gathered around the Chancellors desk. PALPATINE sits back, relaxed. JEDI, including YODA, MACE WINDU, ANAKIN and OBI-WAN are also talking amongst themselves.
SENATOR BAIL ORGANA: This is a major blow to the Separatists. Without Count Dooku to lead them we’ve got a huge advantage.
SENATOR ASK AAK: You are too pessimistic. The war is over. We should be celebrating the Chancellors safe return!
BAIL ORGANA: Chancellor, with all due respect, there are still many worlds under Separatist control. We’ve still got work to do. The Senate must convene at once.
PALPATINE: My friends, I assure you it shall be done, all in good time. For now, I think we should show our gratitude to Master Skywalker. If you’d excuse me. (He dismisses the Senators politely)
JAR JAR BINKS: Mesa no liken dis. Better when Senator Padmé get here.
BAIL looks at the Gungan as the pair walk away.
MACE WINDU: Congratulations, Obi-Wan
OBI-WAN: Thankyou, Master Windu.
ANAKIN, unacknowledged for the most part for his part in the victory, begins to turn away from the Jedi to join PALPATINE.
MACE WINDU: Anakin, we will discuss the events of the battle later.
ANAKIN: Yes, Master.
The JEDI exeunt. Anakin trails the group, head hanged in shame.
PALPATINE: Master Jedi?
YODA: Chancellor.
PALPATINE: If you’d excuse Master Skywalker for a moment, I’d like to speak with him.
YODA: As you wish, Chancellor.
YODA pauses, almost suspicious for a second, then exits behind the Jedi.
ANAKIN: Thank you for what you said on the ship, Chancellor.
PALPATINE: It is I who should be thanking you, Anakin. The Republic is greatly indebted to your skill and bravery. You are a great asset to the Jedi.
ANAKIN: They don’t seem to think so.
PALAPATINE: There will come a time when the Council appreciates just how powerful you have become, I have no doubt of that.
THEY CONTINUE TO WALK.
EXT: JEDI COUNCIL CHAMBER – DUSK
City traffic scoots by in the distance.
INT: JEDI COUNCIL CHAMBER – DUSK
The Jedi Council have convened. Anakin and Obi-Wan stand in the center of the Chamber, just as they used to as Master and Apprentice.
MACE WINDU: Obi-Wan, your primary objective will be to track down the remaining Separatist leaders. Detain them and bring them back to the Capital.
OBI-WAN: Yes, Master. We already have word from the Commanders that they fled the battle. What about this droid General?
YODA: If survived the crash he did, already left the planet he must have.
MACE WINDU: If you do find him, be wary.
OBI-WAN: I will, Master.
OBI-WAN bows respectfully at the Jedi Masters.
MACE WINDU: Anakin.
ANAKIN: Master Windu.
MACE WINDU: You will stay here, and work with Senate Security to guarantee the Chancellor’s safety.
ANAKIN: With all due respect Master, I’d like to do something more...active.
KI ADI-MUNDI (as HOLOGRAM): We’ve all seen how ‘active’ you’d like to be, Master Skywalker.
ANAKIN shoots the venerable Jedi cutting look.
PLO KOON (as HOLOGRAM): I agree.
MACE WINDU: The Council has made its decision, Anakin. We would prefer to have you stay here and reflect on recent events.
YODA: Calm your mind, you must, Master Skywalker. By unnecessary force was this battle won.
By this point ANAKIN is barely listening to the lecture.
ANAKIN: Yes, master.
MACE WINDU: Good luck. Obi-Wan, report to the council with anything you find.
OBI-WAN nods.
YODA: May the Force be with you.
EXT: LANDING PLATFORM – NIGHT
GENERAL GRIEVOUS stands beside his STARFIGHTER. He holds out his palm and clicks a small HOLOGRAM TRANSMITTER. The ghostly, cloaked image of DARTH SIDIOUS crackles into view.
DARTH SIDIOUS: General Grievous, go to the planet Utapau. We need the Jedi off the capital.
GRIEVOUS nods in acknowledgement.
DARTH SIDIOUS: Jedi Master Kenobi is a particular threat. Destroy him.
GRIEVOUS: Yes, master.
DARTH SIDIOUS: Before you leave, there is one other thing, General...
INT: LIBRARY CORRIDOR – JEDI TEMPLE
YODA, OBI-WAN and BAIL ORGANA are walking down the corridor.
YODA: Mindful you must be of your old Padawan, Master Obi-Wan.
OBI-WAN: I know, Master Yoda. I have the Chancellor’s word that he acted only to defend the Chancellor.
YODA: Hmm. Defeated Dooku may be, but still clouded by the Dark Side, my thoughts are.
OBI-WAN: I feel it also, Master. There’s still something not quite right. Do you think it possible that the Sith are still at large?
YODA: Doubt that I do not, Obi-Wan. But clouded are my meditations.
BAIL: What of the future for the Republic? The Chancellor is yet to relinquish his Emergency Powers, and as it stands, the Senate is putting him under no pressure to.
YODA: Disturbing are these events.
OBI-WAN: Are there any Senators other than yourself campaigning?
BAIL: Some – Senator Amidala, Senator Mothma, and others. But there won’t be enough if to defeat a motion if the matter is taken to a vote.
OBI-WAN: Be wary, Senator Organa. I sense a disturbance in the Force.
YODA: Master Obi-Wan is right. Careful you must be, turn on you, the Senate may.
BAIL: You’re not suggesting that the Chancellor would try to silence us, surely?
OBI-WAN: Well Senator, as long as he has his Emergency Powers, he can do whatever he likes. The Jedi cannot get involved.
YODA: I agree. Over for now is our role in politics.
OBI-WAN: Master Yoda, what of this new Droid?
YODA suddenly looks even more concerned.
YODA: Stop him you must, Master Obi-Wan.
They continue to walk.
INT: PALPATINE’S OFFICE
ANAKIN and PALPATINE are conversing about his lack of assignment. ROYAL GUARDS stand motionless at the doors to his office. PALPATINE is sat on his THRONE supported by aide, SLY MOORE, while ANAKIN stands before the Chancellor’s desk.
PALPATINE: I’m sorry, my friend. I would have thought a hero such as yourself would be exactly what the Jedi need in the field right now. As I understand it, you’ve been their most successful battlefield commander. I can see why. You have done well.
ANAKIN: Thankyou, your Highness.
PALPATINE: You have become powerful, Anakin. Too powerful to be left as a mere security guard.
ANAKIN: I...I do what I must.
PALPATINE: Anakin. I’d like to ask you something very important. Since the Separatists managed to capture me, the protection offered to the Republic by the Jedi has weighed heavily on my mind. I must admit, I have had grave doubts about their capabilities. But not yours. The Jedi can deny it all they like, but it is clear to me that your Jedi skills are beyond their lessons. I understand now your frustration at Master Kenobi’s teachings. It is impossible to doubt - your powers now far exceed his. The bickering in the Senate led to nothing. It was your skills that won this war. I have thought it often, and on the ship I finally got to see I was right.
ANAKIN: Chancellor...?
PALPATINE: Anakin, I’d like to work for me, as head of my personal guard. You are the only Jedi I can trust with the safety of the Republic.
ANAKIN: But the Council?
PALPATINE: The Jedi Council do not need to be made aware of our arrangement. They’ve left you here to protect me. With my authority and your skills, we can crush the Separatists. I am sure our partnership will be mutually beneficial. Can you stand up for the Republic, Anakin?
PALPTINE lets Anakin dwell on that thought. Anakin quickly comes to the only real conclusion available.
ANAKIN: I would be glad to serve you, Excellency.
PALPATINE: I am glad you think so, my young Jedi. Oh, by the way, I heard Senator Amidala is on her way. She should be arriving soon.
ANAKIN can’t help but smile.
ANAKIN: Thankyou, Chancellor. He BOWS and turns to exit.
EXT: LANDING PLATFORM – MORNING.
A sleek silver NABOO CRUISER is finishing its landing cycle. A LANDING RAMP extends to the landing platform, and SENATOR PADMÉ AMIDALA, followed by a gold-covered C3-PO, a pair HANDMAIDENS, and flanked by several NABOO GUARDS. A SENATE COMMITTEE is gathered to welcome her, led by BAIL ORGANA.
The SENATORS bow politely.
BAIL: Welcome back, Senator.
PADMÉ gives a slight curtsey in return. She is hiding her heavy pregnancy well.
PADMÉ: Senator Organa.
SENATOR MON MOTHMA: We’ve got good news. The war is over.
PADMÉ smiles. She can already tell Anakin had something to do with it.
BAIL: There are still many matters needing our urgent attention.
PADMÉ: I know. We must speak with Chancellor at once. Come along, Threepio.
The droid shuffles awkwardly behind the group of Senators.
INT: PADMÉS APARTMENT – MORNING
Threepio is fussing around the apartment. Padmé is unpacking a few things, not enough to give the impression she plans on staying on the Capital for any length of time. ANAKIN enters. The HANDMAIDENS curtsey politely and leave. At first, PADMÉ doesn’t notice him. He pauses for a moment and just looks at her.
PADMÉ turns, and is caught surprised. She takes in a shocked breath. Once she realises who her disturber is, she is overjoyed.
PADMÉ: Anakin!
She runs over and HUGS HIM. ANAKIN smiles widely.
ANAKIN: Padmé.
PADMÉ: I’m so glad you’re okay. When I heard about the crash, I -
ANAKIN: I’m fine. I’m just happy to see you again.
He rubs her belly.
ANAKIN: Is everything, you know, okay?
PADMÉ: Fine. I’m not very comfortable being back here though. The sooner I leave the better. Some of the Senators are going to talk to the Chancellor about the laying down of his Emergency Powers. The war is over now, right? Is Count Dooku is custody?
ANAKIN shakes his head sombrely, avoiding eye contact.
ANAKIN: No.
PADMÉ takes a beat to realise the implication. She becomes sad.
PADMÉ: Oh Anakin...
PADMÉ takes a step back from him.
ANAKIN: Enough about this. I’ve lived this war for three years. I don’t want to spend the little time I have with you debating its morality.
PADMÉ: But Anakin -
She realises he has a point. She strokes the scar across his eye tenderly, and then kisses him softly. The tension between them melts away. She pulls him closer, and hugs him tightly. Anakin winces.
PADMÉ: What is it?
ANAKIN clutches his side.
ANAKIN: It’s nothing...I think.
PADMÉ: Why didn’t you get this attended to? Here, I’ll take a look at it.
INT: PADMÉS APARTMENT – BEDROOM
ANAKIN is topless. He stares at his mechanical hand shimmering in the light with fascination. PADMÉ is tending to a small wound on his side.
PADMÉ: There. It was only a scratch, after all.
ANAKIN smiles at her. PADMÉ looks into his eyes, then down his body. Anakin’s chest is covered with SCARS and BRUISES.
PADMÉ: Anakin.
ANAKIN: They were all worth it.
THEY smile and embrace.
EXT: PALPATINE’S OFFICE – AFTERNOON
It’s mid-afternoon on Coruscant. Clouds have gathered. The forecast is looking pretty grim.
INT: PALPATINE’S OFFICE
A number of SENATORS, led by BAIL ORGANA, PADMÉ AMIDALA and MON MOTHMA, make their way to the Chancellors desk.
PALPATINE: Good to see you safe and well, milady.
PADMÉ: Good to see you too, Chancellor.
The Chancellor is in buoyant mood.
PALPATINE: I understand you have come to talk about the ending of the war?
PADMÉ: That’s right, your Highness. The Senators and I were wondering what would become of your Emergency Powers granted for the war effort now that it is over?
PALPATINE: I thought as much. Though, it has been recommended to me by the Jedi that I retain this burden until the rest of the Separatist leaders have been bought to justice.
BAIL: The Jedi?
PALPATINE: Yes. In fact, a friend of yours, Senator Amidala – Master Skywalker. I understand he is anxious to speak with you.
PADMÉ tries to hide her surprise. She clears her throat.
PADMÉ: If that is what the Jedi think, so be it.
PALPATINE: I will assure the Senate that I have every intention of disbanding this responsibility as soon as it is safe. You have my word.
PADMÉ: Thankyou Chancellor. All we want is a return to normality.
PALPATINE: I understand your concerns, but it is not for me to decide, Senators.
The assembled SENATORS SHIFT UNEASILY.
INT: PADMÉS APARTMENT – DUSK
PADMÉ, BAIL ORGANA and MON MOTHMA are sitting around debating what Palpatine has said. THREEPIO is attempting to serve drinks. ARTOO follows him, whistling and generally being a nuisance.
THREEPIO: Do you mind? I do have a job to do, unlike you.
ARTOO blows him a robotic raspberry.
THREEPIO offers BAIL a drink.
BAIL: Not now, Thankyou.
THREEPIO: Are you sure? Shall I just -
BAIL: (STERNLY) Look...not now.
THREEPIO: Well really! I have to say Artoo, human behaviour never fails to -
ARTOO squeaks and beeps disrespectfully, and rolls off.
THREEPIO: Oh, switch off.
BAIL: The Chancellor may try to push for an extension of his powers. He may try to turn the Republic into a Dictatorship.
PADMÉ: The Jedi wouldn’t allow it.
BAIL: You heard what the Chancellor said, Padmé. The Jedi have given him their support!
PADMÉ is an awkward position. She doesn’t want to betray Anakin, but she can’t help but feel the same concerns as Bail.
PADMÉ: The Jedi have only recommended that his powers remain only until the remaining Separatists are detained.
MON MOTHMA: We must support the Chancellor. We cannot allow rumours to split the Republic apart. The situation is delicate enough as it stands.
PADMÉ: Have you been able to speak with the Jedi?
BAIL: No, the Council have been too busy dealing with recent events to hear any of us. I have a bad feeling about this.
BAIL: Padmé...the war is over but the Senate is still divided. There are more and more Senators in support of the Chancellors power. We must convince the Senate that his Emergency Powers must be given up.
PADMÉ is clearly conflicted.
PADMÉ: I only hope we’re not too late. I’m returning to Naboo tonight. Senator Organa, can you raise this with the Chancellor?
BAIL: Of course, Padmé.
EXT: UTAPAU DROID FACILITY
The huge facility is built into various sinkholes in the ground. It’s less of a factory, more a barracks, used to station reinforcements. An EXPLOSION from inside rocks the facility.
INT: UTAPAU DROID FACILITY
KI-ADI-MUNDI and PLO KOON have led a Stormtrooper charge into a BATTLEDROID foundry, and are making their exit from the ruins. They pause to contact MASTER WINDU over a HOLOGRAM COMMUNICATOR. The 3-D image of MACE appears on their transmitter.
KI-ADI-MUNDI: We’ve crippled the facility, Master, but the Separatist forces are still at large.
MACE WINDU smiles uneasily at the ‘good’ news.
INT: MACE’S QUARTERS – JEDI TEMPLE
MACE: Do what you can.
PLO KOON (V.O.): It won’t be easy. (He pauses anxiously) Wait -
From nowhere, the bodies of CLONE TROOPERS fall, dead, into view. The Jedi ignite their lightsabres and go to battle, still on holographic view. A GIANT CREATURE starts to fight the Jedi.
INT: UTAPAU DROID FACILITY
PLO KOON and KI-ADI-MUNDI fight bravely, but are overwhelmed and killed by the mysterious assailant.
INT: MACE’S QUARTERS – JEDI TEMPLE
MACE looks GRIMLY at OBI-WAN.
INT: YODA’S QUARTERS – JEDI TEMPLE – NIGHT
YODA sits quietly. MACE and OBI-WAN enter.
MACE WINDU: We are getting more reports of Separatist activity across the galaxy. Troops on Kashyyk are reporting large scale attacks on the natives. We’ve already dispatched several Jedi to other planets, and more are already preparing their ships.
YODA: Go to Kashyyk, aid the troops, I will.
MACE: There’s more. We just received word from Ki-Adi-Mundi and Plo Koon. They destroyed a Droid Facility of somekind on Utapau, but we’ve lost contact with them.
OBI-WAN: I’ll make my way to Utapau, Master. I’ll find out what I can about the attack.
MACE: Have you had word from Anakin?
OBI-WAN: I believe he is seeing off Senator Amidala.
YODA looks concerned.
YODA: Hmm.
EXT: LANDING PLATFORM – NIGHT
Padmé is returning to Naboo. ARTOO, THREEPIO, the HANDMAIDENS and her various GUARDS board the sleek CRUISER. PADMÉ and ANAKIN stand at the foot of the ramp.
ANAKIN: I’ll see you as soon as I can.
PADMÉ: Don’t be too long.
ANAKIN: I won’t.
PADMÉ: I love you. Don’t forget it.
They embrace.
EXT: CORUSCANT THEATRE – NIGHT
Dozens of limousine-like taxis pull up outside the THEATRE – a giant, globe-like building that reflects every one of the hundreds of neon lights in the upper entertainment district of Coruscant. DROID VALETS take any privately owned speeders away from the entrance.
INT: CORUSCANT THEATRE – BALCONY
The CHANCELLOR, along with his aides DAR WAC, SLY MOORE and MAS AMEEDA stand in an exclusive balcony above the rest of the Auditorium. A DARK SHADOW joins the Chancellor at the front of the box. The show in the centre of the Auditorium is slow, tragic opera. Anakin and Palpatine are in deep conversation.
PALPATINE: Can I tell you what it was that led to my loss of confidence in the Jedi?
ANAKIN: Of course, Your Excellency.
PALPATINE: Not all the Jedi, Anakin. You stood out to me because you have learned to trust your instincts. You do what you believe is right. I respect that. Your powers have gone beyond the Jedi, Anakin. You should not be serving their whims. You didn’t deserve to be left behind. I know now you are a truly powerful Jedi, and I’m glad you agreed to this assignment.
Palpatine has set Anakins thoughts racing. He begins to hang on the Chancellors every word. In the STAGE SHOW, one of the female ALIEN ACTORS is slowly ‘dying’. Two MALE ALIEN ACTORS stand nearby. One is sobbing, the other is standing menacingly over the pair.
ANAKIN: I am too, Your Excellency.
PALPATINE: Perhaps as my guard you could expand upon your powers further.
ANAKIN: Your guidance is appreciated, Chancellor.
PALPATINE: While I was his prisoner, Dooku told me about the Jedi’s involvement in the Clone Army.
ANAKIN: I thought Dooku had left the Jedi by then?
PALPATINE: He hadn’t yet left. He told me everything. Count Dooku was been dispatched to order a Republic Army under the guise of a recently killed Jedi –
ANAKIN: Master Syfo-Dyas?
PALPATINE: Yes - and he erased all trace of his mission from the Archives. When he realised what he had done he came to discover the Jedi Council was rotten to the core. He became an outcast among the Jedi, and left the Order soon after.
ANAKIN listens, looking increasingly agitated by what he’s hearing.
ANAKIN: But why join the Separatists? Why fight an Army he helped create?
PALPATINE: It wasn’t that simple. Dooku felt betrayed by the Jedi, and decided to his inside knowledge to aid the Separatist effort. While I am of course grateful for the Republic Army and the victory over the Separatist threat, I must admit the Counts words greatly disturbed me. If the Jedi were capable of such betrayal to one of their own, imagine what they could do to the Republic?
ANAKIN has an extremely INTENSE look on his face.
PALPATINE: I fear for you, Anakin. I fear they may be doing the same to you.
ANAKIN is now slightly puzzled, still looking very intense. PALPATINE spots this.
PALPATINE: Think about it, my Jedi friend. The Council notices how much more powerful you have become, and uses you to their own ends. With their objective achieved, they take all the glory. You meanwhile, are assigned as Senate guard. Hardly a fitting tribute to a Hero of the Republic, you must agree?
* ANAKIN: I don`t understand, Chancellor. You say you have learned how the Jedi actually treat the Force as a burden, instead of a gift, something I did not see, but I cannot deny you are right. But if the Jedi are so obsessed with minding their responsibilities why would they have an interest in the downfall of the Republic?
* PALPATINE: Young Master Anakin. I had hoped I would not have to tell you this, for it would pain you greatly, I am sure. Was it not your Master Kenobi who at the time refused to investigate further into the murder attempts behind senator Amidala while you insisted on it?
* ANAKIN`S eyes widen, and he is obviously shocked as the `truth` now hits him.
* ANAKIN: You know this?
* PALPATINE: I have my sources. Regardless, the Jedi would only gain from seeing Senator Amidala gone. It weakens the Republic. That, is why I insisted on you to protect her and keep her safe. I knew that your insights would help the case, more so than Master Kenobi`s rusted principles, and his obvious allegiance to the corrupt Jedi.
In the AUDITORIUM, the ‘evil’ ALIEN ACTOR 3 stabs his partner. The ALIEN ACTOR 2 stages his death. As he falls, he reaches up and STABS ACTOR 3 in the neck. They all fall down dead as the music reaches a crescendo.
PALPATINE (V.O.): The Jedi are as ineffectual as the Senate. They will both need to be dealt with in time.
The PERFORMANCE is interrupted by SCREAMS from the aisles. A familiar THUWUMM sound, an ALIEN CRY -
ANAKIN spins around, instinctively guarding the CHANCELLOR. The fuss is over as quickly as it began.
SMASH! A CLOAKED FIGURE leaps to the lower levels of CORUSCANT through a window. ANAKIN peers down, catching only a glimpse of the assassins silhouette – and a familiar glowing green sword.
Various GUARDS gather around the victims body. It’s the Rodian DAR WAC, One of Palpatine’s AIDES. He’s been SLASHED right across his back. He’s dead. ANAKIN looks at the wound. He knows right away only a LIGHTSABRE could cut like that. He glances up at a concerned looking PALPATNE, anger in his eyes.
PALPATINE: Now do you see, Anakin? I still have my emergency powers. I must make use of them, before the Republic becomes a pawn in the Jedi`s game.
ANAKIN nods determinedly.
INT: JEDI TEMPLE - LANDING PLATFORM - DAWN
Dozens of JEDI, including SAESEE TIN, KIT FISTO, YODA and OBI-WAN KENOBI are preparing their starfighters for their next mission. OBI-WAN clambers into the cockpit of his fighter, and leans over to talk to MASTER YODA, STANDING at the foot of a Ladder.
OBI-WAN: May the Force be with you, Master.
YODA nods sombrely.
EXT: GALACTIC SENATE CHAMBER - DUSK
INT: GALACTIC SENATE CHAMBER
The Senate has convened for an emergency session. The various SENATE PODS are filled with SENATORS in disarray.
MAS AMEEDA: Order! Order.
The Chamber falls silent. The CHANCELLOR RISES TO SPEAK.
